Private Basketball Lessons: When They Help, When They Don't
Private basketball lessons can accelerate growth or waste money. Here's how to know when they're worth it and what to look for in a trainer.
Last week a parent pulled me aside after practice. Her son is 11, plays on a club team, and she'd just started paying for private basketball lessons twice a week on top of his regular schedule. She looked tired. Her son looked tired too.
"I'm spending $400 a month," she said. "He's getting all these reps, but I don't see him getting better in games. Am I doing something wrong?"
I hear some version of this conversation every season. A parent invests real money and real time into private training for their kid, and the results just don't show up the way they expected. Sometimes the problem is the trainer. Sometimes it's the timing. And sometimes the lessons are great — but the kid doesn't have the foundation to absorb what's being taught.
Private basketball lessons can be one of the most valuable tools in a young player's development. They can also be one of the biggest wastes of money in youth sports. The difference comes down to a few things most parents never think to ask about.
The Private Lesson Boom
The youth basketball training industry has exploded. Scroll through Instagram and you'll find hundreds of trainers running flashy dribbling drills with cones and tennis balls. Some of them are excellent. Some of them are running the same workout for every kid who walks through the door, regardless of age, skill level, or position.
The Aspen Institute's Project Play reports that families now spend an average of over $800 per child per year on youth sports — and that number climbs fast when you add private training to club fees, tournaments, and gear. For basketball families chasing a competitive edge, that number can double or triple.
As a coach, I don't have a problem with private lessons. I have a problem with private lessons that aren't connected to anything. A kid doing an hour of advanced crossover combinations when he can't make a right-hand layup in traffic isn't developing. He's performing. There's a difference.
When Private Basketball Lessons Actually Help
Private training works best when three conditions are met. Miss any one of them, and you're probably not getting your money's worth.
First, the player has a real foundation. Think of your game as a house. Private lessons are like adding rooms — a better pull-up jumper, a tighter handle, a more reliable free throw. But if the foundation isn't there — basic footwork, balance, body control, understanding of spacing — those rooms have nothing to sit on. I wrote about this extensively in my book because I've seen it play out hundreds of times. A kid with a shaky foundation and a fancy crossover is still a kid with a shaky foundation.
Second, the trainer teaches to the player's actual level. The best private trainers I've seen do something simple: they watch the kid play a real game first. They identify two or three areas that would make the biggest difference. Then they build a plan around those gaps. They don't run the same circuit for a 10-year-old beginner and a 14-year-old varsity hopeful. If your kid's trainer has never asked what team they play on, what position they play, or what they struggle with in games, that's a red flag.
Third, the player is practicing between sessions. An hour a week with a trainer means nothing if the kid doesn't touch a ball between lessons. Private lessons introduce concepts and refine mechanics. But the actual learning — the deep muscle memory — happens during the reps your kid does on their own. You don't rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your habits.
When all three of those conditions line up, private lessons can accelerate a player's growth in ways team practice alone can't. The one-on-one attention, the personalized feedback, the ability to slow down and repeat a move until it clicks — that's real. That matters.
When They Don't Help
Here's where it gets uncomfortable. I've seen private lessons actively hold kids back. Not because the trainer was bad, but because the context was wrong.
When they replace team play. I've watched parents pull kids from pickup games, open gyms, and even team practices to fit in a private session. That's backwards. Basketball is a team sport. The ability to read a defense, move without the ball, communicate on switches, play within a system — none of that happens in a one-on-one setting. A kid who trains privately three times a week but only plays in organized games is like a musician who practices scales alone but never joins a band.
When they become a status symbol. Let's call it what it is. In some circles, having a "trainer" has become a badge. Parents compare notes — how many sessions per week, which trainer, what drills. The kid picks up on that energy. Suddenly the lessons aren't about getting better. They're about keeping up. That pressure doesn't produce growth. It produces anxiety.
When the player isn't ready. I've seen 8- and 9-year-olds in private sessions working on advanced moves they won't need or be able to execute in a game for three or four more years. At that age, the best thing a kid can do is play. Play basketball. Play other sports. Build coordination, agility, and love for the game. Structured private training makes more sense once a player has enough game experience to understand what they're working on and why.
When the trainer doesn't connect to the coach. The best development happens when a player's private trainer and team coach are on the same page. If the trainer is teaching one offensive philosophy and the team coach runs another, the kid is stuck in the middle, trying to please two systems. A quick conversation between the two goes a long way.
What to Look For in a Trainer
If you do decide private basketball lessons are right for your kid, here's what I'd look for. Not every great trainer checks every box, but these are the signals that separate real developers from rep counters.
- They ask questions about your kid before the first session — what they play, where they struggle, what their goals are.
- They watch your kid play in a real game or scrimmage setting, not just a drill.
- They build sessions around your kid's gaps, not around a generic circuit.
- They give your kid homework — specific things to practice on their own between sessions.
- They communicate with your kid's team coach, or at least ask what the team is working on.
- They measure progress over months, not sessions. Development isn't linear.
A trainer who does these things is a partner in your kid's growth. A trainer who doesn't is just selling hours.
What to Do With All of This
For Parents

AUDIT THE SCHEDULE FIRST Before adding private lessons, look at what your kid is already doing. How many practices, games, and other activities are on the calendar? If the schedule is already packed, adding a private session doesn't fill a gap — it creates overload. Rest and unstructured play are part of development too.

ASK YOUR KID'S COACH Before hiring a trainer, ask your child's team coach what they think your kid should work on. A good coach will give you two or three specific areas. That gives you a filter for evaluating trainers — and it gives the trainer a starting point that's connected to real game needs.

WATCH A SESSION Sit in on a lesson. Is the trainer teaching or just running drills? Is your kid getting feedback after each rep, or just moving through a circuit? Is the session adjusted to your kid's skill level? You don't need to be a basketball expert to spot the difference between purposeful coaching and glorified exercise.

GIVE IT TIME Don't expect results in two weeks. Real skill development takes months of consistent work. If you're evaluating a trainer, give it eight to twelve weeks of consistent sessions before making a judgment. But if your kid dreads going after a month, that's a different conversation.
For Coaches

BE A RESOURCE, NOT A GATEKEEPER When parents ask about private training, don't dismiss it. Tell them specifically what their kid should work on. If you know good trainers in the area, recommend them. The more aligned the kid's development is, the better your team gets. COMMUNICATE WITH TRAINERS If you know a player is working with a trainer, reach out. A five-minute conversation about what you're seeing in games and what the team needs from that player can make the private sessions dramatically more effective.

OWN YOUR DEVELOPMENT A trainer can show you what to work on. But you have to do the work. The reps between sessions are where real growth happens. Keep a notebook. Write down what your trainer taught you. Practice it on your own — even if it's just ten minutes a day.

BE HONEST ABOUT WHAT'S HARD If something doesn't make sense, say so. If a drill feels too easy, speak up. The best training sessions happen when the player is engaged, not just obedient. Being coachable doesn't mean being silent. It means caring enough to ask questions and apply the feedback.
The Real Question
Before spending another dollar on private training, ask yourself this: Does my kid love playing basketball — or are they just going through the motions of getting better at it?
That question matters more than any drill, any trainer, any session plan. Because the kids who get the most out of private lessons are the kids who want to be there. Not because their parents signed them up. Not because their friends all have trainers. Because they want to get better and they're willing to do the work.
Private basketball lessons can be a powerful piece of the puzzle. But they're just one piece. The foundation still matters most — the habits, the love of the game, the willingness to show up and compete every day. No amount of private training replaces that.
