Shooting Form for Young Players: The 3 Things That Actually Matter

Youth basketball shooting form doesn't need to be complicated. A coach breaks down the three fundamentals that actually build consistent shooters.


Last week I watched a 12-year-old kid take fifteen jump shots in warm-ups. Every single one missed. Not because she lacked talent. Not because she wasn't trying. She missed because three different coaches had given her three different sets of instructions over the past year, and now she was thinking about eleven things at once every time she raised the ball.

Elbow in. Flick the wrist. Bend your knees more. No, not that much. Square your shoulders. Load the hip. Dip the ball. Don't dip the ball. Set point higher. Follow through. Hold the follow-through longer.

She was drowning in cues. And she's not alone. Youth basketball shooting form has become one of the most over-coached, over-complicated skills in the game. Every YouTube video, every camp, every well-meaning dad at the park adds another layer. And the kid — the one who's supposed to be learning — gets buried underneath all of it.

Let's strip it back.

Why More Cues Make Worse Shooters

Here's what I've seen at every level: the kids who shoot with confidence aren't the ones with the most technical knowledge. They're the ones who own a small number of fundamentals so deeply that their body takes over when it's time to shoot.

A 2014 study from the Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport found that giving young athletes fewer instructional cues during motor skill learning led to better performance and faster retention than loading them with detailed technical breakdowns. The researchers called it a "constraints-led approach" — give the learner a clear target and a small number of anchors, then let them self-organize around those anchors through repetition.

That matches everything I see on the court. The players who shoot the best aren't robotic. They have rhythm. They have feel. And that rhythm comes from mastering the basics so thoroughly that they don't have to think anymore. Steph Curry's release looks effortless because the foundation underneath it is automatic. He's not running through a twelve-point checklist in his head. He's built a house on a rock-solid base, and the shot flows from there.

So if I could only teach a young player three things about shooting — three anchors they carry with them through every drill, every game, every stage of development — what would they be?

The 3 Things That Actually Matter

1. BALANCE

Everything starts here. If your feet aren't right, nothing above them will be either.

Balance means your feet are shoulder-width apart, your weight is on the balls of your feet, and your knees have a slight bend. Not a deep squat. Not standing straight up. Just enough bend that you can spring upward without having to reload.

Here's a test: if someone gave you a light shove right before you shot, would you fall over? If yes, you're not balanced. A balanced shooter can absorb contact, adjust mid-motion, and still put up a clean shot.

Think of your shot like a house. Balance is the foundation. I talk about this idea a lot in Locked In — no house stands on a weak base, and no shot holds up under pressure without balance underneath it. When you're BALANCED, you can react. When you're off-balance, the rest of your mechanics have to compensate, and that's where ugly misses come from.

How to practice it: Before every single shot in warm-ups, pause for one second in your stance. Feel your feet. Feel the floor. Then shoot. This one-second pause trains your body to find balance automatically. After a few weeks, you won't need the pause anymore. Your body will just know.

2. ELBOW ALIGNMENT

This is the one I correct the most. And it's the simplest to fix.

When you bring the ball up into your shooting pocket, your shooting elbow should be under the ball and pointing toward the rim. Not flared out to the side. Not tucked in tight against your ribs. Under the ball, aimed at the target.

Why does this matter so much? Because your elbow is the hinge. It determines the direction the ball travels. If your elbow points left, the ball goes left. If it flares wide, you're pushing the ball instead of lifting it, and every shot becomes a fight against your own mechanics.

I like to tell players: your elbow is a cannon. Point the cannon at what you want to hit.

Young players — especially smaller ones who don't have the strength to shoot from distance yet — tend to compensate by flaring the elbow wide or bringing the ball to the side of their head. This might generate enough power to reach the rim now, but it creates a habit that gets harder to fix every year. It's better to move closer to the basket and shoot with correct alignment than to bomb threes with a broken release.

How to practice it: Stand three feet from the basket. One hand. Shooting hand only. Elbow under the ball. Flick it in. Do this twenty times before every practice. You're not working on range. You're programming the alignment into your muscle memory. Range comes later. Alignment comes first.

3. FOLLOW-THROUGH

The follow-through is where the shot gets its direction, spin, and touch. And it's the first thing that disappears when a player gets tired, nervous, or rushed.

A good follow-through looks like this: your wrist snaps forward, your fingers point down toward the rim like you're reaching into a cookie jar on a high shelf, and your hand stays up until the ball hits the rim. Hold it. Every time.

Why hold it? Two reasons. First, holding the follow-through forces your release to be complete. A lot of young players cut their follow-through short — they flick and pull their hand back, which kills the backspin and sends the ball flat. Holding it prevents that. Second, the follow-through is a diagnostic tool. If your hand finishes straight, your shot went straight. If your hand drifts left, you know exactly what happened. It's instant feedback.

I hear coaches say "reach in the cookie jar" or "put your hand in the rim." Both work. Pick the image that clicks for you and use it every time.

How to practice it: Lie on your back. Hold the ball in your shooting hand. Flick it straight up toward the ceiling. Your follow-through should point directly at the ceiling. Catch the ball. Repeat. If the ball drifts left, right, or behind you, your follow-through is telling you something. Listen to it. This is one of those drills you can do in your bedroom for five minutes before bed. No gym required.

Putting It All Together

Balance. Elbow. Follow-through. That's it. Not eleven things. Three.

When you watch a great shooter, all three of these are present on every single shot. When you watch a struggling shooter, at least one is missing. Usually it's balance. Sometimes it's the elbow. Often it's the follow-through disappearing under pressure.

The power of narrowing your focus to three anchors is that you can actually check yourself. After a miss, you don't have to wonder what went wrong across a dozen variables. You ask three questions: Was I balanced? Was my elbow under the ball? Did I follow through? One of those three will give you your answer.

This framework is part of the foundation-first approach I outline in my book. Skills are the rooms you add to your house over time — step-back threes, pull-ups, floaters. But those rooms only hold up if the foundation is solid. Balance, elbow, follow-through. That's the concrete you pour first.

What to Do This Week

For Coaches

  1. CUT YOUR CUES IN HALF Audit the shooting instructions you give during practice. Write them down if you have to. If you're giving more than three cues, you're giving too many. Pick the one your player needs most right now and focus there for two weeks before adding anything else.

  2. BUILD A FORM SHOOTING ROUTINE Start every practice with three minutes of one-hand form shots from three feet. No dribbling. No movement. Just the pure shot. This isn't wasted time — it's the most important three minutes of your practice because it reinforces alignment and follow-through before anything else gets layered on top.

  3. USE THE FOLLOW-THROUGH AS A TEACHING TOOL After a miss, don't immediately correct. Ask the player: "Where did your hand finish?" Let them self-diagnose. Players who learn to read their own follow-through become their own shooting coaches. That's the goal.

For Players

  1. MASTER CLOSE BEFORE CHASING DEEP Your range will come. Right now, shoot from a distance where you can maintain all three fundamentals — balance, elbow alignment, and follow-through — without straining. If you have to heave the ball to reach the rim, move closer. Perfect form at eight feet beats broken form at twenty.

  2. DO 20 ONE-HAND FORM SHOTS EVERY DAY Before practice. After practice. In your driveway. At the park. Twenty shots, shooting hand only, three feet from the basket. This takes less than two minutes. Do it every single day and within a month your shot will feel different. You won't have to think about your elbow anymore. It will just be there.

  3. HOLD YOUR FOLLOW-THROUGH UNTIL THE BALL HITS THE RIM Every shot. Practice and games. Make it a non-negotiable. This one habit will improve your accuracy more than any drill because it forces a complete release and gives you feedback on every attempt. You don't rise to the level of your goals — you fall to the level of your habits. Make this one automatic.

When was the last time you watched yourself shoot and asked what your body was actually doing — not what you thought it was doing?

The Bigger Picture

Youth basketball shooting form doesn't need to be complicated. It needs to be consistent. The kids who become great shooters aren't the ones who learned the most cues. They're the ones who owned a few fundamentals so deeply that the shot became part of who they are.

Start with three things. Practice them every day. Build from there.
